Intuos4 is the new and exciting next generation of professional graphics tablets from Wacom. Incorporating feedback from frequent users of the previous Intuos models, Wacom have come up with a revolutionary new design and features to provide the finest pen tablet experience ever.
What's New?
- Tablet layout: new widescreen format (can be set for square as well) and fully rotatable design for left-handers.
- Touch ring: program up to four different functions such as zoom, scroll, brush size change etc.
- ExpressKey displays: (not on Small model) OLED display of each ExpressKey function.
- Radial menus: program up to 512 shortcuts or commands to access easily with the pen.
- New tip sensor: pen activation starts at just 1 gram of pressure - draw or paint with a feather light touch.
- Four nib types: flex, felt, stroke and standard to simulate the feel of your favourite writing instrument.
- Increased pressure sensitivity: 2048 levels for better performance and accuracy.
- Precision mode: active area of the tablet maps to a portion of your screen, meaning broad strokes translate to a smaller working area for pinpoint accuracy and enhanced detail.
- Simplified range: 4 sizes available (small, medium, large and extra large).
- Bundled software: Photoshop Elements, Corel Painter Sketch Pad, Autodesk Sketchbook Express, Nik Color Efex Pro filters, Wacom Photoshop Brushes.
TABLET LAYOUT
 
The Intuos tablet design has been improved for maximum ergonomic comfort, with a slimline body, sloping palm rest and hand support all around the tablet. The ExpressKeys and Touch Ring are made available to your non-dominant hand whatever your handedness, made possible by the fully rotatable tablet layout - simply turn the tablet up the other way, change one setting in the tablet control panel and the Intuos4 will adjust automatically to the new orientation.
TOUCH RING
To better integrate with software evolving to include canvas rotation, the Intuos Touch Strip has been replaced by a Touch Ring. The toggle button in the centre of the ring gives you the power to program four different functions to the ring, allowing you to choose between zoom, scroll, rotate, change brush size, change opacity and many more.
EXPRESSKEY DISPLAYS (Not on Small model)
Gone are the days of forgetting what each of your ExpressKeys are programmed to do - with the inclusion of a new display Intuos4 shows each button's function for the active application. If you have programmed different functions for different programs, the ExpressKey display will update when you switch between them.
RADIAL MENUS
Activating the new radial menu brings up a maximum of 8 initial commands or menus and up to two levels of sub-menus for a total of 512 places for shortcuts, commands or functions with minimal movement of your pen.
PEN TIP
 
Now more precise than ever, the Intuos4 Grip Pen has 2048 levels of pressure sensitivity which you can program to control brush size, opacity, colour and more. Wacom have also introduced new pen nibs in order to more accurately reproduce different feels. The Intuos4 ships with the following nibs, conveniently stored in the pen stand:
- Standard - hard plastic to simulate a pencil on paper feel
- Felt - provides more friction to simulate felt tip pen or canvas-like paper
- Stroke - built with a spring for the softer touch of brushes
- Flex - made from a material that gives a soft, rubbery feel
PRECISION MODE
Precision mode allows you to create intricate details at the pixel level. Once precision mode is activated, the full area of your tablet maps to a small portion of your screen. This allows you to create finer, more detailed work than ever before.
BUNDLED SOFTWARE
Adobe Photoshop Elements 7.0 (Win) / 6.0 (Mac)
Adobe Photoshop Elements is an elegant combination of power and simplicity that will allow you to make all of your digital photos look their best. Combined with the Intuos4 pen tablet, you will be able to tell engaging stories with your photos by introducing enhancements, effects and personalization to them. Then, when your photos are ready for prime time, you can use Photoshop Elements to showcase them in online albums, or create your own personal photo book.
Corel Painter Sketch Pad
Corel's new Painter Sketch Pad provides the tools to allow you to transfer ideas quickly from out of your head and onto the page. Designed with the Intuos4 in mind, Sketch Pad accurately recreates the natural feeling of sketching and painting by hand on paper or canvas. Sketching tools include pencils, pens, chalks, markers, and many more. Sketch Pad is broadly compatible with a variety of file formats, seamlessly integrating with many applications and producing a better workflow. The innovative temporal palettes fade from view when not in use to create a tidy workspace, and the entire interface was designed for pen use. There is even an email command that lets you send sketches to your friends and co-workers at the push of a button.
Autodesk Sketchbook Express
Sketchbook Express is the light version of Autodesk's popular Sketchbook Pro. With most of the same great features and pen-optimized interface as its big brother, Sketchbook Express will have you sketching in seconds and productive in just minutes. The intuitive interface, combined with the unique arced tool palette, provide the tools you need to work without the need for manuals or tutorials. Just pick up your Intuos4 pen and start sketching.
Nik Color Efex Pro filters
Nik Color Efex Pro filters are the leading photographic filters for digital photography. Photographers of all levels rely on Color Efex Pro filters to save them time and to produce stunning, professional results. The sample filters bundled with Intuos4 allow you to selectively apply lighting and photo enhancements with your pen. Nik Color Efex Pro filters, with their patented U Point technology, will help you get the best out of your digital photos.
Wacom Brushes
Wacom Brushes are custom brush presets for Photoshop CS+ and Photoshop Elements 4+. The set includes 81 brushes especially designed to take advantage of the control and pressure sensitivity of Intuos4. Add these custom brushes to the Adobe brushes directory and enjoy new tools to expand your creativity.
WHICH SIZE?
If you're going to be using your tablet in multiple locations, the small and medium sizes will provide the lightweight portability you need, but be aware that the small version has only 6 ExpressKeys as opposed to 8, and doesn't have the ExpressKey Display panel.
